My Love Letter to Memphis, Tennessee

I love Memphis.  The sights, the sounds, the history all settled along the Mississippi River.  Growing up my family would visit Memphis quite often, so much that I wanted to live there, but fate took me to another music town in Tennessee.  It had been several years (I believe over a decade) since I had visited, so my sweet husband took me to Memphis for a late birthday celebration.  Pulling into the city, all the memories of visiting in the past came rushing back.  We stayed at the Peabody hotel and it was magnificent.  We arrived just in time to grab a drink in the famed lobby to watch the Peabody ducks parade up to their quarters for the evening.  Become tourists on our trip, we did a walking ghost tour of the city, going to parts of Memphis that I’d never gone to before.  It was hot, that sticky southern summer hot that you read about in books by William Faulkner or John Grisham.  Being from Jackson, Mississippi, the heat and humidity did not bother me as much as it did my sweet Nebraska Husker, aka AC boy.  Our second day there we walked to the riverfront, down Beale Street, toured the Rock & Soul Museum and Sun Studios.  One of the most surprising parts of the trip was going to the newly opened Bass Pro Shop in the old Pyramid.   We took the elevator in the center of the Pyramid, up to the top where they have a bar and two look out balconies with the most breathtaking views of the city and the Mighty Mississippi.  This is definitely a ‘must do’ for anyone traveling there.  After that, our final stop on our tourist list was to go to the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr drew his last breath.  We took in a moment of reverence for his amazing contributions to this world.  Even though there is still sadness there, you can tell there is much honor for such an amazing man.  Of course no trip to Memphis would be complete without eating at a BBQ restaurant, so we met up with our friends at Central BBQ.  Although I don’t eat meat, they did have an amazing mac & cheese!  Memphis will always be one of my favorite cities to visit.  I look forward to our next trip there.  Thanks y’all for reading my ramblings on such an amazing town.
